So I broke down and got a 50mm lens. I had been curious as to why so many people use it for portrait shots and such. Now that I've been playing with it, I can certainly see why.

Yes. I don't know as much about Nikkon, but for Canon the 50mm f/1.8 is typically $100 or so, and worth every penny
You can also get some longer fixed (prime) lenses if you do a lot of portrait photography, along with various sorts of flash
